Dataset Creation
This page describes the steps how to create and modify a dataset on Edmond.
This section shows the first step of the workflow, namely the creation of the dataset, and how to add data and metadata. For your convenience, we offer a quick summary and an extended description with screenshots.
Quick summary
Create a new dataset:
- Log in into your Edmond account.
- Click button "Add Data" and "New Dataset".
- Enter metadata, then click "Save Dataset" button.
- Upload files by clicking "Edit Dataset" and "Files (Upload)"
Modify an existing dataset:
- Log in into your Edmond account.
- Go to the dataset which you want to modify
- Click on "Edit Dataset"
Once everything looks fine and you want to submit:
- Click on button "Submit"
- Wait for response by DataReviewer.
Create a new dataset
If not done yet, log in to Edmond like described here.
- For creating a new dataset, click on button "Add Data", then "New Dataset":
- Hints:
- In case you should not find the "Add Data" button, click on the Edmond logo in the topleft corner of the window in order to get back to the start page.
Now, the "Add Data" button should be visible. - Per default, non-MPG employees will not be able to create new datasets. In that case please ask an MPG employee for doing so. Or you can contact the Edmond support team, describing your issue, and providing us with the contact of an MPG employee who is involved.
- In case you should not find the "Add Data" button, click on the Edmond logo in the topleft corner of the window in order to get back to the start page.
- Hints:
- Fill the medatata fields.

For the very first draft, it is sufficient to fill the required fields, which are marked with a red asterisk. - At the bottom of the window click the "Save Dataset" button.

Hint: We recommend to use the "Save Dataset" rather early and repeatedly once the mandatory metadata are filled in. This can save some time in case the browser window would be closed accidently. - For uploading files, go to "Edit Dataset" and "Files (Upload)"

- You can drag and drop files or click "Select Files to Add".

- If desired, add description and file path of each file. Then click "Save changes".

Modifying an existing dataset draft
As long as your dataset has not been published (and as long as you have not sent your dataset for review), you can still change your dataset - both, the data files and metadata.
- For that, go to your dataset and click on "Edit Dataset", followed by
- "Files (Upload)" if you want to upload further files
- "Metadata" if you want to update your metadata
- "Terms" if you want to update the licence
- "Thumbnails + Widgets" if you want to change or add the thumbnail of the dataset.

Create a new version of a dataset
After a dataset is published, it is still possible to publish a new version of that dataset, having the same DOI, cf here. Use cases are:
- A paper related to the dataset has meanwhile been published and received a DOI. Thus, the reference to that paper shall be updated on Edmond (field "Related Publication").
- The Readme file or some other small files need to be updated, i.e. replaced by a new version.
- New files are added.
The first case affects only metadata, thus it is considered as minor revision, and therefore the new dataset version would be 1.1 in case the previous one has been 1.0.
For the other two cases, files are replaced or added, thus they are considered as major revision, and therefore the new dataset version would be 2.0 in case the previous one has been 1.0.
For creating a new dataset version, follow the same steps as abovementioned in section Modifying an existing dataset draft, i.e. go to the dataset, click on "Edit Dataset" etc. Once you want to submit: Click on button "Submit" and wait for response by DataReviewer, like shown in section Curation workflow.
