Account Creation & Login

This page shall help users having or needing an Edmond account, covering aspects like the login process.

Login

There are two types of login, here named as "SSO account" and "local account". For most cases, MPG employees are recommended to use the SSO account, while local accounts may be used by collaboration partners or in special cases. In case of doubt, you can contact the Edmond support team.

SSO account

Edmond uses the Single Sign-on (SSO) system of the Max Planck Society. That means that per default, all MPG accounts are ready to log in to Edmond. An additional registration is not necessary.

Steps for Log in:

• On Edmond start page go to "Log In"
• Click on "Max Planck Society"
  
• Choose your institute, click on "Next". In case your institute should not listed in the dropdown menu, you could choose "Other Users", but see below for the consequences.
  
• Enter your user name and your usual MPI SSO password, then click on "Login". Depending on your institute, the window shown on this step may vary, and you might be asked for MFA (Multifactor Authentification) - your local IT may help you regarding issues about that.
  
• If you already have an account, you should be logged in now: In the topright corner, your name should be shown instead of "Login".
  
  Otherwise, you will be asked the accept the Terms of Use and to create the account by clicking "Create Account".

Log in into a local account

• On the Edmond start page go to "Log In"
• If you already have a local account, click on "Username/Email" (i.e. button below "Other options"), otherwise see below in section Register for a local account.
• Enter your username or email and your Edmond passwort, then click on "Login"

Register for a local account

In case you are not a MPG employee and do not have an Edmond account yet, you can create one if you are collaborating with a MPG partner and need to upload data. However, please see here for the conditions and contact the Edmond support team. Please consider also, that non-MPG employees will not be able to create new datasets, cf here.

Steps for Registration:

• On Edmond start page go to "Log In" (topright corner of the page)
• Click on "Sign up for a local Edmond account."
• Enter the needed information, read the General Terms of Use, check the box beside "I have read and accept the Max Planck Digital Library General Terms of Use as outlined above.", and enter "Create Account".

Once done, you should automatically be logged in, i.e. you should see your name instead of "Log in " at the topright corner. Furthermore, as confirmation, you should get a welcome email (subject: "Edmond: Your account has been created") to the email address you have chosen.

Details and issus with SSO

This section is mainly relevant in case of occuring problems and for specific use-cases.

Choice of MPI or Other User

As described above, when logging in via SSO, one has to select their institution in the dropdown list. Nowadays all MPIs should be included there (you may contact Edmond support team if your MPI is missing).

However, the list still contains the entry "Other Users" (in the German view shown as "Weitere Benutzer*innen"), and when logging in to Edmond the first time, one could choose that in case the desired MPI was missing.

But as consequence of having chosen "Other Users" the first time, one has to chose "Other Users" every time when logging in to Edmond.

This may lead to an error when you have already been logged in to another MPG SSO: Letʼs for example assume you work at the MPI of Psychiatry and have logged in into the MAX intranet via SSO, choosing "MPI of Psychiatry" from the dropdown list. Now you also want to log in to Edmond. Thus, as described above, you go to Edmond start page, click on "Log In" and then on "Max Planck Society". But then, instead of the expected dropdown menu, you see a window like the following, which asks you whether to create an account (although it already exists) - so please click on "Cancel" in that case.

To prevent that, you can go to edmond.mpg.de/Shibboleth.sso/Logout and click "Yes, log out everywhere" (in German: "Ja, überall abmelden"). This logs you out from any existing SSO session. Afterwards the SSO login should work (choosing "Other Users"). Alternatively, you can start another browser or a private browser window - in case of Mozilla Firefox you find this in menu "File" then "New Private Window" (in German: menu "Datei" then "Neues privates Fenster").

In case that does not help, you can contact the Edmond support team. We recommend to make screenshots of the individual steps and attach them.

The password required when choosing "Other Users" can differ from your regular MPI SSO password. Instead, you need the password from MPG IKT services. Click on "Forgot password and/or set a new one?" in case you do not remember that one.

Conversion between SSO account and local account

From local to SSO

If you still have a local account, you may want to switch to a SSO account. This is possible when you have a regular MPG SSO account (this should be the case for all MPG employees having a MPG personal number). To perform this conversion, follow the steps of section SSO account until you are asked whether you want to convert your local account to an SSO account, which you have to confirm.

From SSO to local

In certain cases it can make sense to convert an existing SSO account into a local account. In that case please contact the Edmond support team.
